Essential UK Travel Tips

Make the most of your trip with these handy tips from experienced travellers.

UK Weather

The UK weather is famously unpredictable! Pack layers and a compact umbrella year-round. Summer (June–Aug) is warmest at 15–25°C.

Getting Around

London's Underground (the Tube) is the easiest way around the capital. Use an Oyster Card or contactless payment. Trains connect the whole country.

Currency

The currency is British Pound Sterling (£). Cards are widely accepted. ATMs are abundant in cities. Scotland uses its own banknotes but they are valid across the UK.

Power & Plugs

The UK uses Type G plugs (3-pin) and operates on 230V/50Hz. If you're from the EU or USA, you'll need an adapter.

Emergency Number

Call 999 for Police, Fire or Ambulance emergencies. For non-emergencies, call the police on 101 and NHS health advice on 111.

Driving

In the UK, traffic drives on the left side of the road. An International Driving Permit (IDP) may be required alongside your own national licence.

Food & Dining

Tipping isn't obligatory but 10–15% is appreciated in restaurants. Try traditional dishes: fish & chips, Sunday roast, Scottish haggis and Welsh rarebit.

Best Time to Visit

Late spring (May–June) and early autumn (Sept–Oct) offer the best balance of pleasant weather and fewer crowds. Summer is busy but lively with festivals.
